Plate Gains Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 28, 2026
Plate Gains is a fitness and nutrition app made by Aidan R Sethen, with Austin J Sethen as co-developer, independent developers in British Columbia, Canada ("we", "us"). This policy explains what the app collects, why, who else handles it, and the choices you have. If you have a question, email a2sethen@gmail.com.
The short version
- Plate Gains collects health and fitness information so it can build your plan and keep your logs.
- The free version shows non-personalised ads from Google AdMob; Premium removes them. No health, food, weight or workout data ever goes to the ad provider.
- We don't sell your data, we don't track you across other companies' apps, and the app has no analytics.
- A few services help run the app: Supabase stores your account and data, Anthropic's Claude AI reads photos and writes meal plans when you ask it to, Open Food Facts answers food searches, RevenueCat keeps track of Premium subscriptions, and Google AdMob shows ads in the free version.
- You can delete your account and all your data at any time in Settings.
Who can use Plate Gains
Plate Gains is for adults 18 and older. We ask for your date of birth before an account is created and don't create one for anyone younger. If you believe someone under 18 has an account, contact us and we will delete it.
What we collect
- Account: your email address and password. Your password is handled by our login provider, Supabase, which stores only a scrambled (hashed) version; we never see it.
- Profile: date of birth, sex (used only in the calorie formula), height, weight, units, goal and weekly pace, training experience, activity level, training days and equipment, diet type, allergies, foods you have on hand, foods to leave out of meal plans, meals per day, and any calorie or macro targets you set yourself.
- Health screening: your answers to the health questions during setup (for example a heart condition, high blood pressure, diabetes, pregnancy, an injury or a history of an eating disorder). We use them only to make your plan more cautious and to suggest when to see a professional.
- What you log and create: food diary entries, your own foods and recipes, workouts and the sets you log, your own exercises and workout splits, bodyweight entries, changes you make to your training plan, and your meal plans.
- AI usage records: each time you use an AI feature we record what kind it was, when, and how large the request was, so we can apply daily limits and track costs. We don't keep the photo or the AI's reply in these records.
- Subscription: whether you have Premium, which plan, and when it started and renews (from RevenueCat). We don't see or store payment details.
- Photos: nutrition-label and meal photos are sent to be read and are not stored by Plate Gains. The camera is only used when you choose to scan a barcode or take one of these photos.
Much of this is health information. We treat all of it as sensitive. We don't collect your location, contacts or advertising identifiers. In the free version, Google's ad service collects some device information itself, as described below.
How we use it
- To calculate your targets, build your training and nutrition plans, and show your progress.
- To keep your data in sync between your phone and our database, including when you're offline.
- To run the AI features you ask for.
- To apply daily limits and keep the service working and secure.
We don't use your data for advertising, we don't sell or rent it, and we don't share it except as described in this policy.
Who else handles your data
- Supabase (database, login and server hosting) stores your account and everything listed above, and runs the server code that talks to the AI. Our data is stored on its servers in the United States (Virginia), so it is outside Canada.
- Anthropic (Claude AI) receives data only when you use these features: a nutrition-label photo; a meal photo; or a meal plan request, which sends your daily calorie and macro targets, diet type, allergies, meals per day, foods you have on hand and foods to leave out. It does not receive your name, email address, date of birth or weight. These requests go through our server, so Anthropic doesn't see your email or your phone's internet address. Anthropic is based in the United States and handles this data under its commercial terms and privacy policy.
- Open Food Facts, a non-profit food database based in France, receives the words you search for and the barcodes you scan, sent directly from your phone. Like any website, it can see your phone's internet (IP) address. No account information is sent.
- RevenueCat (subscription management, based in the United States) receives your account's ID number (not your email or name), your purchase history from the App Store or Google Play, and basic device information such as the app version and country, so it can tell the app whether you have Premium. It doesn't receive your health or fitness data.
- Google AdMob (advertising, Google LLC, based in the United States) shows banner ads in the free version; Premium accounts see no ads and load no ad requests. Every ad request asks for non-personalised ads only, so the ads aren't based on your interests or your activity in other apps. To serve and measure ads and prevent fraud, Google receives information about your device and the app (such as the device model, operating system, app version and language), your phone's internet (IP) address and the approximate location it implies, and how you interact with the ads (for example whether one was shown or tapped). It does not receive your name, email address, or any health, food, weight or workout data. On Android, Google's ad software can read your phone's advertising ID, for example to limit how often an ad is repeated and to detect fraud; we don't use it, and it isn't used to personalise ads in Plate Gains. We never ask iPhone users for permission to track them. If you're in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, Google's consent form asks for your choice before any ad is requested, and ads load only if your choice allows. Google handles this data under its own privacy policy (policies.google.com/privacy); see how Google uses data from apps that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
- Sentry (crash reporting, Functional Software Inc., based in the United States) receives a report only if you turn on "Send crash reports" in Settings, which is off until you do. A report holds the error, where in the app it happened, and basic device information (model, operating system, app version). It doesn't include your name, email, account ID, or any health, food, weight or workout data, and we don't send it the app's network requests, logs or screenshots. Turning the switch off stops reports from that phone.
- Apple and Google distribute the app and handle Premium payments under their own terms and privacy policies. We never see your payment card details.
- We may disclose information if the law requires it, for example in response to a valid court order.
Data on your phone
The app keeps a copy of your logs on your phone so it works offline, and stores your login session so you stay signed in. Progress photos you take or add are saved only on your phone, in the app's own storage; they are never uploaded, synced or seen by us, and deleting the app deletes them. If you connect Apple Health (iPhone) or Health Connect (Android) in Settings, Plate Gains reads today's step count from it to show on the Today screen, and saves the workouts and weigh-ins you log into it. That data stays in Apple Health or Health Connect on your phone, under their own privacy controls: we don't upload your steps, and you can disconnect any time in Settings or in the Health app. Health data is never used for advertising or shared with advertisers. Signing out leaves the copy of your logs on the phone; deleting your account removes it.
How long we keep it
We keep your data until you delete your account. Deleting your account in Settings (Delete account) permanently deletes your login and, with it, your profile, logs, plans, custom foods, recipes and exercises, and AI usage records from our database, and clears the copy on your phone. This can't be undone. Deleted data may remain in our hosting provider's backups for a limited time until those backups are replaced. Records of purchases are kept by Apple, Google and RevenueCat as their policies and tax laws require; email us to have your RevenueCat record deleted.
You can also ask us to delete your account by emailing a2sethen@gmail.com from the address you signed up with.
Your rights
In Canada, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) gives you the right to see the personal information we hold about you, to ask us to correct it, and to withdraw your consent (by deleting your account). If you're not satisfied with how we handle a concern, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
If you live elsewhere, for example in the European Union, the United Kingdom or California, you may have similar rights under your local law, such as getting a copy of your data, having it corrected or deleted, or objecting to how it's used. We will honour these requests wherever we reasonably can, whatever the law where you live.
Most of your data can be seen and edited in the app. For anything else, email a2sethen@gmail.com. We may need to confirm it's really you, and we'll reply within 30 days.
Security
- Data travels between the app and the services above over encrypted connections (HTTPS).
- Our database uses row-level security: rules in the database itself that let each account read and change only its own data.
- The keys for our AI provider and server are kept on the server, never in the app.
No system is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee that your data will never be accessed without permission. If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
Analytics and tracking
The app has no analytics. Crash reporting (Sentry, described above) is off until you turn it on in Settings, and never includes your health data. The free version includes Google AdMob, described above, which shows non-personalised ads. We don't use it, or anything else, to track you across other companies' apps or websites. Premium removes ads. If we add analytics later, it will be off until you choose to turn it on, and it won't include your health data.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we'll update the effective date above, and for significant changes we'll tell you in the app before they apply.
